SAfER Fostering, a trauma-informed, not-for-profit fostering agency, part of the Centre of Excellence in Child Trauma (CoECT), is setting a new precedent with its revolutionary approach to foster care. This small, yet influential agency operates across Wales and is trailblazing by offering comprehensive private medical care, as well as some support for dental care, for not just foster parents under its care but also their foster and birth families – a first-of-its-kind initiative in the sector.
Alison Douglas, Operations Manager at SAfER Fostering, who is a qualified social worker, said: “We’re addressing a critical gap in the system. Given the current strains on GP services and hospitals, our foster families often face lengthy waits for medical appointments. By providing prompt access to private medical care, we’re not just alleviating these pressures but are also empowering our carers to focus more effectively on the emotional and developmental needs of the children, setting new benchmarks in foster care.”
This groundbreaking approach by SAfER Fostering is not only innovative but necessary. Research indicates that children who grow up in care are up to four times more likely to suffer poor health into adulthood compared to those raised by their parents. SAfER Fostering’s initiative directly addresses these disparities, offering a lifeline that can significantly alter the life trajectories of these children.
Sarah Naish, CEO of CoECT, Co-founder of SAfER Fostering, former foster parent, and author, said: “Amidst a backdrop where larger fostering agencies focus on poaching foster parents by providing large financial incentives, we’re prioritising what really matters – we’re providing real solutions to real issues. Our commitment goes beyond traditional care; we are looking at the holistic needs of our children and their families and ensuring that our support system is as inclusive as it is effective. By integrating excellent medical care into our model, we are addressing immediate health concerns and setting the stage for healthier, more stable futures.”
Gareth, who is a Foster Parent, said: “I haven’t seen or heard this discussed by any other fostering agency. This is a massive step forward. Aside from the obvious health benefits, this will make a big difference to the time it takes me to book appointments. Instead of wasting time on hold, my time and energy can go into what really matters… the children.”
Another Foster Parent, Kiera, said: “Being offered a healthcare plan from our fostering agency was huge for us. It’s so important to keep our families healthy, and sadly, even getting a doctor’s appointment these days can be a challenge. Knowing there are now other options we can explore for when we need it is a huge relief. And it’s a bonus to know we’re covered by another non-profit organisation who share our values.”
As SAfER Fostering continues to lead with this landmark initiative, it challenges other agencies to elevate their standards and adopt similarly holistic and proactive approaches. The work of SAfER Fostering is more than a service enhancement; it’s a call to action for systemic change, promising to inspire a shift across the entire sector and better support the lives of countless children in foster care.
