Salutem Care and Education has invested £400,000 to redesign its Westacres service in Basildon, which will provide much needed support for individuals with autism and complex behaviours.

This substantial development will also generate 20 new jobs in the local area, enhancing the community’s support infrastructure for young people with autism and complex behaviours.

In 2022, Essex County Council identified a critical need for specialised residential services and introduced its Complex Residential Framework. Salutem Care and Education responded to this call by applying for the tender. The organisation was selected, directly leading to the commencement of the Westacres project.

Westacres is designed to be a state-of-the-art, four-bedroom property, each featuring a private lounge space, bedroom, and ensuite bathroom. One of the bedrooms is fully wheelchair accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all residents. The property boasts two kitchens, one specifically aimed at promoting independent living skills, a pantry, a laundry room, a conservatory, a quiet room, a spacious dining/lounge area, an office, and an activity space within the medium-sized back garden.

The specialist support available at Westacres is a result of close collaboration between Salutem and Essex County Council. Numerous meetings and site visits have ensured that the design and facilities meet the highest standards of care and support.

Advice from Essex professionals regarding the layout and available equipment has been integral to the project. Additionally, internal teams at Salutem have been developing resources and bespoke training programmes to build competent and confident local teams. Recruitment efforts are focused on attracting specifically skilled staff to support the unique needs of the residents.

John Godden, Chief Executive of Salutem Care and Education, expressed his enthusiasm for the project:  “We are immensely proud of the investment in Westacres and to provide a high-quality, supportive environment for young people with autism and complex behaviours. This project is a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional care and the importance of our collaboration with Essex County Council. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this service will have on the lives of those we support.”
