by Kirsty Kirsty

The leading social care communications firm will be supporting a leading independent social care charity in chairing discussions with Anna Dixon MP, Ben Coleman MP, Kathryn Smith, Dr Clenton Farquharson CBE, and Karolina Gerlich.

With not long to go until the 2024 Labour Party Conference kick-off in Liverpool, Public Relations and Public Affairs firm PLMR, and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), will be hosting a panel with the theme ‘Overcoming hurdles to spreading innovation in social care’ at the PLMR Policy Hub.

The aim of this panel is to give leading political voices and sector specialists the opportunity to share their insights and perspectives on the key priorities of Keir Starmer’s new Government.

The panel of experts includes Ben Coleman MP, Labour MP for Chelsea and Fulham; Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive Officer of SCIE (chair); Dr Clenton Farquharson CBE, Associate Director of Think Local Act Personal (TLAP); Karolina Gerlich, Chief Executive of the Care Workers’ Charity; and Anna Dixon MP, the Labour MP for Shipley.

The speakers have a wealth of experience between them from a range of sector viewpoints.  Together, they will discuss how the social care system can overcome some of the deep-rooted and systematic challenges facing the sector, including investment and workforce shortages.

The discussion will also look forward to solutions, including expanding access to innovative technologies, and leveraging opportunities for investing in prevention and early support.

These cross-sector insights and ideas will dive into the sector’s view on what is needed to secure a sustainable social care system that is fit for the future.

PLMR’s Social Care Practice is the UK’s leading specialist strategic communications consultancy with a team focussed exclusively on supporting organisations in the adult social care sector.

Lucy Taylor, Associate Director and Deputy Head of Health and Social Care at PLMR, commented:

“It’s really important to us that social care is given the presence it deserves at this year’s Labour Party Conference and so we’re delighted to be partnering with the Social Care Institute of Excellence to bring the conversation to the heart of Government as new policies are formed.

“We want to provide a platform to allow our speakers to engage in some productive and critical discussion surrounding how we can accelerate and improve innovation in social care, and overcome just one of the many obstacles we are facing today.

“I’m looking forward to some interesting and solutions-focused exchanges, and hearing what our social care leaders are hoping to see from Starmer’s new government in the coming months.”

Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive Officer of SCIE, said:

“I have worked in social care since 1989, but I have not seen a change in government in 14 years – this is a pivotal moment for politics, and therefore a pivotal moment for social care.

“I am pleased to be chairing this panel event during this year’s Labour Party Conference and look forward to some fruitful discussion surrounding some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.

“As someone who celebrates and advocates for sharing good practice and coproduction in social care, I value pushing for continuous conversation to identify and tackle the sector’s concerns under Starmer’s new leadership.”

This panel will take place on Monday, 23rd September from 11AM to 12PM. Located within the secure zone, in Arena Room 4 in the ACC, these discussions will be hosted at the PLMR Policy Hub.
