·        Health and social care agency saves local authorities £500K annually

Leeds-based Unity Plus, a leading health and social care agency, is expanding its supported living division. This expansion provides additional homes and care for people with complex needs, transforming lives and delivering significant cost savings for local authorities in the Yorkshire region and beyond.

As part of this growth, the company recently set up a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) to rent homes to people it supports at affordable rates. The first tenant moved into a CIC-managed home on November 19, 2024.

The organisation currently manages 14 properties in Yorkshire, each for a different individual. A 15th person moved into a new home in Halton Moor on the 10th December and another property in the same area is now ready for occupancy. Also, a one-bedroom flat in Middleton is available for immediate rental.

Unity’s Plus’ supported living model helps local councils save around £32,760 a year per person. With the planned 16 people supported, by the end of the year, this amounts to over £524,000 annually. The savings come from the difference between the rent the CIC charges to cover its costs, and the far more expensive rate paid to emergency housing providers.

The Leeds-based agency supports people with complex needs, which may include severely challenging behaviours, personality disorders, physical disabilities, and/or neurodivergence. Each home is customised to meet these individual needs, focusing on single occupancy unless otherwise requested. This ensures residents have the space and support they require, unlike many emergency accommodations.

Unity Plus is also working with councils in North Yorkshire, Leeds, Bradford, and Kirklees to find homes for people with specific needs. Immediate plans currently include acquiring properties in Harrogate and Starbeck to expand their support.

Ross Hodgson, Unity Plus CEO comments: “We’re really passionate about providing quality housing solutions that make a real difference to people’s lives. The recent additions in Halton Moor and Middleton highlight our commitment to meet the growing demand for safe, affordable homes in the community.

“Looking ahead, we hope to work with more councils across the region, expanding our services to reach even more individuals needing safe, clean, homely,  and supportive living environments.”
