Shire Oaks Court care home, which opened in September of last year and created 100 jobs in the West Midlands, has passed its first assessment successfully!
Shire Oaks Court, a care home operated by leading complex care provider Exemplar Health Care, received a ‘Good’ overall rating in its latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) report. Additionally, it was rated ‘Good’ for each of the five key lines of enquiry (KLOEs), rating the care home on how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led its services are.
Through the CQC’s new assessment framework, which uses percentage scoring, this amounted to an overall 75% score.
Having opened in September 2023, Shire Oaks Court care home supports adults living with complex mental health needs, early on-set dementia, neuro-disabilities including Parkinson’s disease and physical disabilities. The nurse-led team also supports individuals with prolonged disorders of consciousness, behaviours of concern, and those who require tracheostomies, ventilators and PEG feeding tubes.
According to the CQC’s report, residents and their families expressed that they were “happy with the care they received, the staff that supported them and their living environment”.
The assessment found that Shire Oaks Court colleagues worked with residents, their loved ones, and relevant health professionals “to ensure positive outcomes for people”.
Specifically relevant to complex needs care, Shire Oaks Court care home’s alignment with the Mental Capacity Act principles was commended, with the report highlighting that people being supported by the care home were receiving tailored approaches based on their individual care needs.
The CQC report went on to say that people living at Shire Oaks Court were “supported in a kind and caring way”, and “treated with dignity and respect”. The assessment praised the home’s “person-centred approach” and observed that people “felt involved in their care”.
The CQC inspectors further expressed that Home Manager Ami Narwal “should feel justifiably proud” of what she has achieved in the short time the care home has been open.
Ami Narwal reflected on this, stating:
“We are very satisfied to have received such a positive first CQC assessment, it’s an incredible milestone to have reached less than a year after opening the home. The team prides itself on creating a supportive environment at Shire Oaks Court and helping the people of Walsall get the nursing care they need. We want to continue to work hard to support people on their rehabilitation journey from hospital to community-based living.”
Shire Oaks Court, which also has an 8.8/10 carehome.co.uk rating, has 30 large bedrooms, each with an en-suite, across three units.
The home has communal dining and living spaces, an activities hub, therapy room, a beauty salon and a large accessible garden. It is intentionally built close to local amenities and transport links so that people can maintain their community connections.
Many of the people supported by colleagues at Shire Oaks Court care home display behaviours that are deemed ‘too complex’ for mainstream nursing and care providers, so would otherwise have to permanently stay in settings that may not be best suited to their needs.
