Leeds-based care agency donates £35K to support care home residents

Leeds-based Unity Plus, a leading health and social care agency, announces that the organisation has contributed over £35,000 to 40 care homes as part of its residents fund initiative, which began in 2022.

Unity donates £1 for every shift worked in care homes over a six-month period. This funding goes directly to each care home’s resident fund, ensuring that it can be used for various initiatives, from social events to creating recreational spaces.

Many of Unity’s team members have had experience managing and working in care homes and have created the initiative to address the challenges faced by these facilities.

“We understand that care homes operate on very tight margins,” comments Unity Plus CEO, Ross Hodgson. “By contributing to resident funds, we ensure that care home residents benefit directly from our donations, rather than the money being absorbed into the home’s operational budgets.”

Unity’s donations have enabled care homes to provide unique benefits to their residents’ needs. For example, Sunningdale Nursing Home used its funds to purchase a virtual fish tank, creating a calming and engaging environment for its residents, Hemsworth Park Care Home was able to fund a festive Christmas party, and Malsis Hall has been able to convert a room into a gym.

Jan Cowie, Chair of the Resident’s Committee at Lister House, met with Hibat Ur-Rehman (Customer Relations Manager at Unity) and Ross to thank Unity Plus for the funds. She explained that the money donated by Unity Plus has been crucial in helping the home deliver bespoke activities for the residents.  She described that it had been used to purchase various items, including running pamper sessions, buying “lots of gin” for them to enjoy, and paying for the residents’ Christmas Party.

Ings House has reported that it used its funds to buy all the residents a Christmas present.

The company’s staff personally deliver cheques every six months, and these visits often include presentations and photo opportunities.

Other charitable initiatives Unity Plus is involved with include partnering with Ghana-based charity Race4Aid. The staffing solutions provider donates £1,000 monthly, funding projects such as constructing 12 water wells, paying university tuition fees for aspiring medical and nursing students, and providing food to widows and orphans in rural communities.

Ross adds: “These initiatives are about making a real difference. We’re passionate about giving back—locally and globally—and will continue exploring new ways to do so.”
