Leading digital care planning software provider becomes the first digital care record system to send NEWS2 readings to the NHS

A leading digital care planning software provider has become the first digital care record system to send NEWS2 readings to the National Health Service (NHS) via the National Record Locator (NRL).

Person Centred Software, a provider of the UK’s most widely used digital care planning and electronic medication administration record system (ATLAS eMAR), is cementing its business status as the market leader in connecting health and social care.

Person Centred Software can now share vital medical information directly via its Digital Care System – providing better guidance, context and care to healthcare practitioners nationwide while underlining the importance of interoperability in today’s care climate.

NEWS2, increasingly used across the acute care pathway, enables care teams to recognise sick residents more quickly to get help earlier.

Most Care homes record a resident’s vital signs when they arrive at the home to help them understand what is normal for that individual. The system allows care homes and carers to interpret vital signs through a scoring system. The six vital signs used in NEWS include respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, blood pressure, level of alertness and temperature.

So, for instance, if a resident becomes unwell, the carer can give the GP, 999, or the ambulance crew the NEWS – this helps healthcare professionals quickly understand how unwell somebody is and how soon they need to be seen.

Care providers can now share this information easily through Person Centred Software’s Digital Care System, allowing the information to be transferred to hospitals while improving resident outcomes and quality of care.

An updated version of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) was first introduced in 2012 by The Royal College of Physicians and updated to NEWS2 in December 2017, providing a systematic and standardised assessment of acute illness.

Speaking of the NEWS2 tool, Andrew Coles, CEO at Person Centred Software, said: “We are incredibly pleased to be helping the NHS, pioneering effective solutions to ensure the best care possible for healthcare practitioners across the UK and beyond. We hope that being the first digital care record system to send NEWS2 readings to the NHS via the NRL showcases the organisation’s ambitions to strengthen its presence within the industry. But, more importantly, it helps improve the overall quality of care within the sector. Such a feat gives us confidence that we have what it takes to continue pushing the boundaries of care while creating greater accountability and enabling better outcomes for residents.”

Person Centred Software is leading the way to joined-up care. It was also the first electronic care system to launch an integration with NHS Digital’s GP Connect HTML view product, which enables care providers to access the GP records and medical notes of those being supported in real-time.

Person Centred Software connected over 25,000 care home beds to health services within a year of going live – the GP Connect service has helped nurses and social care professionals have the information they need to deliver outstanding care.
