Top rating puts The Old Hall in the top 4% of homes in the UK

A family owned company that supports adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex physical and mental health is celebrating after one of its care homes was awarded another Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Awarding The Old Hall in Fiskerton an Outstanding rating for the second time running, inspectors particularly praised the home for being responsive and well led.

As a result, nine of Home From Home Care’s 11 residential homes and specialist integration services are rated Outstanding, meaning the provider accounts for 41% of all Outstanding-rated care homes in Lincolnshire.

Nationally, fewer than 4% of care homes in England are rated Outstanding by the CQC. This contrasts with 82% of Home From Home Care’s residential homes having the top rating.

Managing director of Home From Home Care, Paul de Savary says that the key to the company’s success is its innovative, data-informed New Model of Care, and the quality of its 500-strong workforce. Paul de Savary said:

“We are immensely proud that The Old Hall has been rated Outstanding by the CQC, meaning that nine of our 11 homes in Lincolnshire are among the very best in the country.

“Being rated Outstanding against a background of Covid-19 and the nationwide recruitment crisis in the care sector is testament to our dedicated and highly skilled colleagues, as well as our organisation as a whole.

“We started Home From Home Care because we have a daughter with learning disabilities and we wanted to transform the way care homes operate. We combine innovation with compassion and dedication to change lives for the better. With our unique, data-informed and management system which we developed in-house for 12 years, we’re empowering colleagues to make a far greater impact.

“Because every role here is highly skilled and because values such as empathy are absolutely essential, we only hire the most committed people who share our values. As a family business, we pay very well and we invest in people’s future so they can build amazing and fulfilling careers where they feel recognised and supported. A great outcome which recognises our New Model of Care like this Outstanding rating does is a cause for celebration and it’s a big relief!”

Situated in the heart of Fiskerton near Lincoln, The Old Hall is a two-storey former farmhouse that’s been extensively rebuilt to accommodate adults with a range of care needs, who each have their own apartments. A key focus of the Old Hall’s service is helping people there to be part of their local community, and this was one of the key observations from the CQC inspection.

Inspectors also praised the ‘tireless’ efforts the team made during the pandemic to ‘offer innovative ideas to promote opportunities for people to promote their emotional wellbeing and confidence and to reduce the impact of social isolation’, and they praised the registered manager’s passion for delivering care that promotes equality.

Other key statements in the inspection report include:

  • The service had gone the extra mile to find out what people had done in the past and evaluated whether it could recreate opportunities.
  • People received exceptionally responsive and person centred care which met their needs and had an extremely positive impact on their wellbeing.
  • Relatives were consistently, overwhelmingly complimentary about the way the service was managed.
  • Staff were highly motivated and passionate about providing truly personalised care.
  • The provider had clear vision and values for the service which were cascaded and embraced throughout.
  • The provider had excellent oversight of the safety and quality of the service.

In the last year, Home From Home Care has introduced a series of improvements to better support its team and support a more diverse workforce. These include enhancements to its pay and benefits systems, the introduction of flexible payment schemes and a pay rise for all colleagues of 10.5% or more. This brings starting wages to at least £11 per hour or £23,859 per year for over 18s with a 4% attendance bonus.

In addition, the organisation has become a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to support members of the forces community in work and it is now an accredited Living Wage Employer. Home From Home Care is also rated Platinum by employment appraiser Investors in People and it has won a series of awards including Best Care Home Group at the Care Awards 2020 and Tech for Good at the Lincolnshire Innovation & Technology 2021.
